An 18-year-old Kobe Bryant barely took his training wheels off when he burst into the spotlight with a series of high-flying dunks to win the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. It would be one of many trophies Bryant would collect in his career.
Bryant received experimental platelet-rich plasma therapy called Orthokine in Germany to treat the pain on his left knee and ankle,[228][229] and Mike Brown replaced the retired Jackson as coach of the Lakers in the off-season. Bryant began the season playing with an injured wrist.[230] On January 10, 2012, Bryant scored 48 points against the Suns. "Not bad for the seventh-best player in the league", said Bryant, referring to a preseason ESPN ranking of the NBA's top players.[231] He went on to score 40, 42, and 42 in his next three games.[232] It was the sixth time in his career he scored 40 or more points in four straight games, a feat exceeded only by Chamberlain (19 times).[233] At the 2012 NBA All-Star Game, Bryant scored 27 points to pass Jordan as the career scoring leader in the All-Star Game.[234] He also suffered a broken nose and a concussion in the third quarter of the All-Star Game after a hard foul from Dwyane Wade.[235] In April, Bryant missed seven games with a bruised left shin.[236] He returned three games before the end of the regular season. He sat out the season finale against Sacramento, foregoing the chase for a possible third NBA scoring title, having needed 38 points to surpass Kevin Durant.[237] The Lakers were knocked out of the playoffs by Durant and Oklahoma City in the second round of the playoffs, losing in five games in what would be Bryant's final playoff appearance.[238]
Bryant was called "one of the greatest players in the history of our game" by NBA commissioner Adam Silver,[373] and The New York Times wrote that he had "one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport."[373] Reuters called him "arguably the best player of his generation",[346] while both Sporting News and TNT named him their NBA player of the decade for the 2000s.[374][375] In 2008 and again in 2016, ESPN ranked him the second-greatest shooting guard of all time after Jordan.[351][376] In 2022, to commemorate the NBA's 75th Anniversary The Athletic ranked their top 75 players of all time, and named Bryant as the 10th greatest player in NBA history, the second highest shooting guard on the list, behind only Jordan.[377] Players including Kevin Durant,[378] Dirk Nowitzki,[379] Dwyane Wade,[312] and Derrick Rose called Bryant their generation's version of Jordan.[380][381] The Press-Enterprise described Bryant as "maybe the greatest Laker in the organization's history".[382] He was the Lakers' all-time leading scorer, and his five titles are tied for the most in franchise history.[383] Both numbers he wore during his career, 8 and 24, were retired by the Lakers on December 18, 2017.[384] In his first year of eligibility, Bryant was named a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, weeks after his death,[385] before being elected a couple of months later in April 2020.[386] His formal induction was delayed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[387] In October 2021, Bryant was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all time by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.[388]
Kobe Bryant made his name — and subsequent many nicknames — as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers but was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996 with the 13th overall pick. It is safe to say that the trade did not work out in the Hornets’ favor and led to much success for the Los Angeles Lakers.
In his 20 seasons in Los Angeles, Kobe racked up numerous team records. He won an MVP award, five championships, made 15 All-NBA teams, 12 All-Defensive teams, 18 All-Star games and won two Finals MVPs. He finished his career as third on the all-time scoring list with 33,643 points and 14th in steals at 1,944.
His career has put him among the greats and etched into Lakers’ history. It is very rare that a player spends his entire career with one team. The ones that do often become legends within that organization, such as Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki and Kobe.
Not only was Kobe one of the best at what he did, but he was also one of the toughest to ever play the game. He suffered numerous injuries throughout his career, such as really bad ankle and finger injuries. He continued to battle through the pain each night and still put up monster numbers.
The ultimate injury to his Achilles’ tendon started his career into it’s dwindling days. As that injury is one of the worst in sports and by that time he was 34 years old, so he didn’t have father time on his side.
Each season is unique in its own way and tells a story about his career. He had a lot of great years prior to his 2013 season where he tore his Achilles tendon. He was one of the most clutch players in the NBA to pair with his elite defense and elite offense. Kobe truly was special and bleeds the purple and gold.
The Lakers put on a touching memorial for Kobe, Gianna and the seven others that perished in a helicopter crash. There were laughs and cries, pain and joy. Vanessa Bryant gave a truly wonderful speech.
Now we will take a journey through Kobe’s 20-year career and re-live them down to the best. The game was never the same without Bryant when he retired. Even over a year after his passing, the sports world is still hurting.
Kobe’s seasons ranked from number 20 all the way to number one.
Ranking every Kobe Bryant season with the Lakers: 20. 2013-14
This was the toughest season of Kobe Bryant‘s career and the easiest choice for this list. He would make it all the way back from his torn Achilles tendon, but his season would only last six games. He sat out the first 19 games of the season to continue recovering, before making his return on December 8th, 2013.
In that game Bryant would play close to 28 minutes and struggle from the field, shooting 2-of-9 and 0-of-3 from 3-pointer. It was also expected, he looked very winded because he had not played in-game situations in close to eight months. It just goes to show that him making it back in less than eight months, how tough he was as a player and how much he loved the game.
He would go on to make his 16th All-Star game that season, voted in by his popularity. He would not play in that game due to his last game of the season coming on December 17th, 2013 vs. the Memphis Grizzlies. In that game he suffered a lateral tibial plateau fracture in his left knee.
For the season Bryant finished averaging 13.8 points, 6.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds on shooting splits of 42.5/18.8/85.7. He also turned the ball over a career-high 5.7 times per night. His eFG% of 44.5% and TS% OF 50.5% were both the third-lowest of his career.
Overall his advanced stats were dreadful, posting a 98.6 offensive rating and 106.9 defensive rating, that comes out to a -8.3 net-rating. The Lakers were 2-4 with Kobe in the lineup and finished out a dismal season at 27-55 and Mike D’Antoni was gone after that.

Next: No. 19

Los Angeles Lakers: Ranking all 20 seasons of Kobe Bryant's career - Page 20
https://lakeshowlife.com/2020/03/08/los-angeles-lakers-ranking-20-seasons-kobe-bryants-illustrious-career/2/

(Photo by Nathaniel S. Kobe’s rookie season was one that didn’t feature him as a top option. He played in 15.5 minutes per night, he only made six starts that season in 71 games.
The Lakers were coming off of a 53 win season in which they made the playoffs, but lost in the first round in the 1995-96 season. So Kobe being 18 years old figured to take a back seat to a veteran team eyeing a deep playoff run.
The team featured Shaquille O’Neal, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, Jerome Kersey and Elden Campbell leading the way. Kobe played very well at times during the season. In his spot starts he scored 12, 19, 10, 19, 20 and seven respectively. In those games he shot 30-of-67 combined which was good for 44.8 percent from the field, he also shot 36 percent from 3-pointer.
On the season he averaged 7.6 points per game on shooting splits of 41.7/37.5/81.9. That’s not bad for an 18-year-old coming straight out of high school into the NBA to a team that had championship aspirations on their mind.
Looking into the advanced stats that year Bryant fared quite well. His offensive rating was below average at 101.9 but his defensive rating came out to above average at 99.9, so he finished with a positive net-rating of two. His eFG% was 47.7% and his TS% was 54.4, which were around the bottom in terms of his career.
The Lakers would go on to win 56 games under Del Harris during the season and ultimately lose in the second round to the Utah Jazz in five games. Kobe would average 8.2 points per game on shooting splits of 38.2/26.1/86.7.
Doing this at 18 years old is a feat itself. The highlight of the year would be impressing the judges and winning the Slam Dunk Title. He put on a good show for the fans and judges.
Somewhere along the line in his rookie season Kobe earned Shaq’s respect. The guy had confidence like no other!

Shaq shares a story about telling Kobe “there was no I in team.”
Kobe’s response: “There’s a ‘Me’ in that mother*****r.” (via @cjzero) pic.twitter.com/GORaPqQARF
— SLAM (@SLAMonline) February 24, 2020

Next: No. 18

Los Angeles Lakers: Ranking all 20 seasons of Kobe Bryant's career - Page 20
https://lakeshowlife.com/2020/03/08/los-angeles-lakers-ranking-20-seasons-kobe-bryants-illustrious-career/3/

Ranking every Kobe Bryant season with the Lakers: 18. 2015-16
Kobe’s last season in the NBA came in the 2015-16 campaign. By 2015, he was on his farewell tour in his final season and wasn’t the player he once was. He struggled most of the year shooting the ball and seemed to be walking around every game with ice bags all over his body.
He tried as hard as he could night in and night out to play in every game so that fans could see him. He was able to play in 66 games that year and would average 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per night, playing 28.2 minutes per game.
His shooting splits were very dismal at 35.8/28.5/82.6 for the year. He seemed to have a lot of volume and there were plenty of nights the Lakers deferred to him so that he could get his points on certain nights.
Many nights graded out negatively on the court, but the team was very bad during the season and not many players had decent lines. It was Byron Scott’s second and last season with the Lakers as the team finished 17-65 and missed the playoffs for a third straight year.
On the court Kobe graded out with a 100.1 offensive rating and a 114.9 defensive rating, that stands out as a -13.8 net-rating. The team had an offensive rating of 99.7 with Bryant on the bench so he still had an impact in season 20. But their defense was a lot better with Bryant off the floor, but that was to be expected at this point in his career.
Of course the highlight of the season was the final game of his career. The last game of the season a beat-up Bryant that could barely walk dropped 60 points and hit the game-winner. The entire Staples Center was going nuts and it capped off a Hall of Fame career. He also played in the 18th All-Star game of his career.
I will never forget watching this game and just knowing every shot down the stretch was going to go in. I kept thinking to myself there is no way the basketball Gods don’t let Kobe pull this out on such a historic night. Truly a treat to watch and something many of us will remember our whole lives.
https://twitter.com/nbatv/status/1230273356991225856?s=21

Next: No. 17

Los Angeles Lakers: Ranking all 20 seasons of Kobe Bryant's career - Page 20
https://lakeshowlife.com/2020/03/08/los-angeles-lakers-ranking-20-seasons-kobe-bryants-illustrious-career/4/

(Photo by Garrett W. He battled injuries for most of the year while playing in 35 contests. Scott in his first year as coach with the team didn’t manage Bryant’s minutes well, often overplaying him.
There were multiple instances that he played Bryant over 40 minutes in a game. This is something at that age and after all those injuries, he should not have been near those numbers. Kobe did put up some good games this season and although his burst was gone, he displayed more vision and showed to be more of a passing guard.
On November 30th in a win over the Toronto Raptors, Bryant would drop a triple-double and become the oldest player to have a 30 point triple-double. In the 129-122 win he dropped 31 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. Shooting 45.8% on the night this would turn out to be his best game of the season.
His volume was very high, shooting 20.4 shots per night, he made 7.6 of those shots. His shooting splits were 37.3/29.3/81.3, which showed he was continuing on the heavy decline post Achilles injury.
After resting for two games, Bryant returned to play the Pelicans on January 21st. Unfortunately he would suffer a torn rotator cuff and miss the rest of the season. Adding to the long list of injuries he had built up through his career to all the nagging ones he suffered this season.
Bryant would be voted into his 17th All-Star game which he would sit out with his injury. The team would finish 21-61 and miss the playoffs for a second straight year. His offensive rating for the season 102.1 and his defensive rating was 113.9, which was a -11.8 net-rating.
Highlight of this season would come when Bryant would pass Michael Jordan on the all-time points list. He accomplished the feat on December 14th, vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves surpassing 32,292 points.
At that stage in his career Kobe was struggling each night with pain. It was tough to watch as he continued to battle every night. It was the first of his 18 All-Star selections in his career. He would have a positive impact on a Lakers team that finished the season 61-21 and made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Jazz.
He established himself as a two-way player and teams started to see the player he was about to blossom into. Looking into advanced stats his offensive rating was 108.8 and his defensive rating was 102.7, good for a +6.1 net-rating. It showed the positive impact he had for a stacked Lakers team that was starting to get ready for a dynasty two years later.
For the year Bryant would average 15.4 points on shooting splits of 42.1/34.1/79.4. He was third on the team in scoring behind Eddie Jones and Shaq. He was the top player off the bench, playing in 79 games at 26 minutes per night. His eFG% of 46.9% and TS% of 54.4% were both around the middle of the pack for his career.
The highlights of the season for Kobe would be when he was named the youngest All-Star starter in NBA history. It started his rise to popularity in the league. He also was the runner-up for the Sixth Man of the Year award behind Danny Manning of the Phoenix Suns.
The fact that he was playing a key role on a contender at just 19 years old says all it needs too. Young Kobe was set to let the world know who he was. It was also the first season of his career that he would establish himself as a starter. The season was cut short due to the NBA lockout, with only 50 games played, Bryant started all 50.
The Lakers would go through three coaches this season which included Del Harris, Bill Bertka and Kurt Rambis, although Bertka was only interim for one game. The team would finish 31-19 and would make it to the second round of the playoffs before getting swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
Bryant enjoyed success in the starting lineup, playing in 37.9 minutes per night, he would average 19.9 points per night. He also bumped up his rebounds per game to 5.3 per night and assists to 3.8 per night. He was expanding his game and at the age of 20 he was entering the talks of becoming a star in the league.
Bryant would post-shooting splits of 47.5/26.7/83.9, he would struggle from 3-point range but his volume wasn’t very high only shooting two per night. His offensive rating was 105.2 and his defensive rating was 102.6, that was good for a +2.6 net-rating. That number was lower than his previous season but the team battled through numerous changes this season.
The highlight of this season would come when Bryant was named to his first All-NBA team. After the season he was named to the All-NBA third team. The Lakers were coming off of a disappointing 2002-03 season in which they lost in six games to the Spurs in the second round. After a 3-peat from 2000-02, the Lakers were looking to get back to the top for the 2003-04 year.
The team went out and signed two guys who were near the end of their careers looking for rings. They were Gary Payton and Karl Malone, both had been superstars earlier in their careers but now were reduced to role guys. The team also signed Bryon Russell from the Jazz.
The season had ups-and-downs, they battled injuries with Malone playing in 42 games, Bryant in 65 games and O’Neal in 67 games. Payton, Derek Fisher and Devean George were the constants playing in all 82 games. The team would go on to finish the season 56-26.
Making it all the way to the NBA Finals, the team would be shut down in five games by the Detroit Pistons who had one of the best defenses of all-time that year. Kobe would go on to shoot 37% that series and struggle badly to score.
Kobe would have a positive impact on both ends finishing with a 106.1 offensive rating and a 100 defensive rating, good for a +6.1 net-rating. In his 65 games, he made a lot of plays all over the floor. But it just wasn’t enough come playoff time and the big-name team couldn’t get a ring, Payton would go on to win one in Miami, Malone retired ringless.
Statistically, Bryant would post a line 24 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 5.1 assists per game. His shooting splits dipped a bit to 43.8/32.7/85.2. Highlights of his season would be making his third straight first All-NBA team and his second first All-Defensive team while earning his sixth All-Star selection.
When you add that many egos to one team, something is bound to go wrong. The team brought on Mike Brown to coach the team after Phil Jackson retired from coaching and the team struggled to get going early. Eventually going 41-25 on the year, they would be bounced by a young explosive OKC Thunder team.
Bryant was 33 years old and although he wasn’t the young athletic player he used to be, he found ways to be successful and change his game. He averaged 27.9 points per game, 5.4 rebounds per game and 4.6 assists per game. His offensive rating was the lowest since his rookie year at 104.8, while his defensive rating was 102.1, good for a +2.7 net-rating.
The team struggled with Kobe off the court for the year registering a 101.3 offensive rating which was a -3.5 difference. Showing that he was still very valuable to the team’s success.
He turned it up a notch in the playoffs as he would go on to average 30 points per game. Little did we know that this would be the last time we would see Bryant in the playoffs. His last game vs. OKC that year he lit them up for 42 points hitting shot-after-shot going 18-33 on the night.
That series OKC would win in five games but Bryant would average 31.2 points per game on 42.6% shooting. The Lakers did not catch a good draw as they looked to be a lot slower and were outplayed by OKC in many facets of the game.
Bryant didn’t take it too lightly that he was voted seventh-best player in the league. He often went out and played with a chip on his shoulder to prove the doubters wrong.
Bryant enjoyed many highlights this season including his 14th All-Star game, 10th All-NBA first-team selection and third All-Defensive second-team selection. He also enjoyed a streak of scoring 40 or more points in four straight games.
Playing in the All-Star game, he went on to pass Michael Jordan’s all-time scoring mark. He averaged six assists per game and it was tied for the second-highest mark of his career, only behind his 6.3 average in 2013-14.
It was a down season for the Lakers as they finished 34-48, and there was a lot of criticism that surrounded Bryant after 03-04. The team hired Rudy Tomjanovich, who resigned in the middle of the year due to health issues. The season just seemed to be a waste as a whole from the start.
Bryant although second in the league in scoring, did so on high volume as he shot splits of 43.3/33.9/81.6. Averaging 27.9 points per game to go along with his six assists and 5.9 rebounds, he posted a good line across the board. The supporting cast around him was a big weakness in his first season with Shaq.
Looking into advanced stats they didn’t paint a good picture either as his offensive rating was 107.6 and his defensive rating was a 109.7, for a -2.1 net-rating. It was the first time in his career that he finished with a negative net-rating. Although his TS% finished at the fourth-highest of his career at 56.3%.
The stats would lead to many saying this season should be farther down the list. That could be true, he didn’t make an All-Defensive team and was All-NBA third team. But the Lakers struggled without Kobe on the court and the team didn’t have much time to build around after the Shaq trade.
Highlights of the season were 18 double-doubles and five triple-doubles to evolve his all-around game better. The team was 28-38 with Bryant in the lineup and 6-10 without him. They were looking to get their second 3-peat in the last 10 years. Bryant was playing rejuvenated basketball and although him and Gasol went back-and-forth often, they enjoyed a lot of success together.
The season started off great with the Lakers winning their first eight games. The team finished the season 57-25 as it would be Phil Jackson’s last season coaching. They would end up getting bounced in the second round by the Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas Mavericks.
Bryant enjoyed a great season as his FG% stayed steady at 45.1% and his shooting splits were 45.1/32.3/82.8. He averaged 25.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists per night. His impact on the court was still elite as his offensive rating was 111.5 and his defensive rating was 104.2, good for a +7.3 net-rating. His eFG% of 48.7% and TS% of 54.8% were in the middle of the pack for his career.
The Lakers offense was bad with him off the court as their rating dropped to 101.2 which is a -10.3 differential. So it showed how his game was still elite and as Kobe went the Lakers went as well.
Highlights of the season included Bryant being the leader in All-Star votes and winning the All-Star MVP with 37 points and 14 rebounds. The first season that Kobe would win a championship with the Lakers. In Phil Jackson’s first year with the Lakers the team won 67 games and won 15 of their 22 games Kobe played in the playoffs. He missed one game in the Finals from a Jalen Rose play that led to a twisted ankle.
The duo of Shaq and Kobe were too dominant for the NBA to handle. It was the start of a 3-peat and the Lakers taking over basketball again. Bryant, although he didn’t have the highest scoring total of his career, he was efficient and continued getting better. His eFG% of 48.8% was tied for the sixth-highest of his career.
He shot 46.8% from the field which was the second-highest of his career. His stat line consisted of 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game on shooting splits of 46.8/31.9/82.1. Also to mention he was doing all of this at just 21 years of age.
The season started a streak of 17 straight All-Star appearances and started to put him on the map of the best players in the game. But they proved to be very good still together, leading the team to its second straight title. They defeated the Boston Celtics in seven games and Bryant proved as he had so many years before his talent on both ends.
For the year Bryant was phenomenal, he averaged 27 points, 5.4 rebounds and five assists per game. Starting out 17-25 that year the Lakers seemed bound to miss the playoffs amid a lot of drama.
Bryant had other plans and at age 34 he showed how dominant he could still be in the league. With Gasol and Nash missing extended periods of the season and an unmotivated Howard, Bryant single-handily carried the Lakers to a 28-12 record in the last 40 games sneaking the Lakers into the playoffs as the seventh seed.
Bryant’s defense dipped off and he didn’t make any defensive team, but his offense and clutch stats were elite.
